Appendix: About the School

The School of Journalism and Communication at Nanchang University has a long-standing tradition, profound academic heritage, and distinctive strengths. Originally established in June 1958 as the Department of Journalism at Jiangxi University, it was among the earliest journalism programs founded in the People’s Republic of China.

Today, it is the only journalism school in Jiangxi Province co-built by the Provincial Party Committee’s Propaganda Department and a university, and the sole institution in Jiangxi authorized to nominate entries for the China News Award.

The School offers four undergraduate programs—Journalism, Broadcasting & Television, Advertising, and Broadcasting & Hosting Arts—all designated as National First-Class Undergraduate Programs. It holds a full academic ladder:

  • Postdoctoral Research Station in Journalism and Communication

  • Doctoral and Master’s Programs in Journalism and Communication (first-level discipline)

  • Professional Master’s Degrees in Journalism & Communication and Drama & Film

This forms a comprehensive talent development system spanning bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral levels.

The School offers three national first-class undergraduate courses and operates one provincial-level demonstration experimental center, with teaching and research infrastructure reaching national advanced standards.

Our faculty features a well-balanced mix of disciplines, ages, and academic ranks, with strong teaching capabilities and systematic research training. Members include:

  • Teaching Steering Committee members (Ministry of Education)

  • “Baosteel” Outstanding Teachers (MOE)

  • National “Top 100” Theoretical Talents in Broadcasting & Film

  • Provincial academic leaders, teaching backbone staff, gold-medal instructors, and high-performing teaching teams

  • Mentors of national/international award-winning student innovation projects (e.g., China International “Internet+” Competition)

The School has received dozens of awards for teaching and social science research achievements.

Journalism and Communication is a Key Discipline under Construction in Jiangxi Province. The doctoral program (approved in 2018) is the only one of its kind in Jiangxi, and the School is the province’s sole host of a postdoctoral research station in this field.

Current research strengths include:

  • Red Culture Communication

  • Food & Health Communication

  • Film & Television Communication

  • New Media Communication

In recent years, faculty have secured over 30 national-level projects, including Major/Key Projects of the National Social Science Fund, specially commissioned projects from the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, Chinese Academic Translation Projects, and MOE Philosophy & Social Science Research Grants. They have won more than 10 first- and second-prize awards from the Jiangxi Provincial Social Science Excellence Awards, published over 70 papers in top-tier journals such as Journalism & Communication Research, Marxism Research, and Qiushi, and produced over 20 policy reports endorsed by provincial leaders and implemented in practice—demonstrating strong alignment with national and regional strategic needs.

The School serves as:

  • Chair Unit of the Party Newspaper & Periodical Studies Committee (Chinese Association for History of Journalism and Communication)

  • Vice-President Unit of the Chinese Communication Association and Global Corporate Communication Association

  • Deputy Director of the National Alliance for Red Culture Communication and Marxist Journalism Education

  • Lead Institution for the Jiangxi Higher Education Journalism & Communication Discipline Alliance and the Provincial Teaching Steering Committee for Journalism Programs

Through its four provincial think tanks and research centers, the School has generated a series of distinctive, high-impact outcomes and cultivated multiple competitive research clusters.

Student development is a core priority. Learners excel holistically in moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and practical education. Students regularly win top honors in national competitions, including:

  • “Taofen New Seedling Award” (highest honor for journalism students)

  • National Student Journalism Paper Competition

  • China College Students’ New Media Innovation Contest

  • China College Students Advertising Art Competition

  • China International “Internet+” Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition

Graduates are employed nationwide, with many serving as key personnel at prestigious institutions such as Xinhua News Agency, People’s Daily, and China Media Group, as well as leading cultural enterprises and advertising agencies. Former Xinhua News Agency Director Mu Qing once remarked: “Most of your graduates have become Xinhua’s backbone—this is a vital base for journalism education in China.” The People’s Daily Editorial Office also sent a formal letter to Nanchang University’s Party Committee, highly praising our students’ political integrity and professional competence.
