The School of Journalism and Communication at Nanchang University traces its origins to the Department of Journalism at Jiangxi University, which was established in June 1958 as the third higher education journalism teaching program in New China. At that time, Yu Sheng, then Vice President of Jiangxi University, concurrently served as the first department head. The School is now co-established by the University and the Publicity Department of the Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee under the "Ministry-Province Co-construction" model, and is also a designated unit for the submission of China News Awards selections. All four of the School's undergraduate programs—Journalism, Radio and Television, Advertising, and Broadcasting and Hosting Arts—have been selected as National First-Class Undergraduate Program Construction Sites. The School houses a Postdoctoral Research Station in Journalism and Communication, a first-level doctoral program and master's program in Journalism and Communication, as well as two professional master's programs in Journalism and Communication, and Drama and Film Studies. This forms an integrated talent cultivation system spanning bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral levels in journalism and communication. The School also offers 3 National First-Class Undergraduate Courses and 1 Provincial Demonstration Experimental Center.

The School boasts a faculty team with a well-structured disciplinary, age, and professional rank composition, characterized by strong teaching capabilities and systematic academic training. Its members include members of the Teaching Guidance Committee for Journalism and Communication Majors under the Ministry of Education, recipients of the Ministry of Education's "Baogang" Outstanding Teacher Award, Outstanding Innovation and Entrepreneurship Mentors of the Ministry of Education, National Radio, Film and Television "Top 100 Theoretical Talents," Young and Middle-Aged Academic Leaders and Backbone Teachers of Jiangxi universities, Gold Medal Mentors, High-Level Teaching Teams, as well as provincial and ministerial-level talents and mentors of Gold Award teams in the International "Internet+" College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition Finals. The faculty has received dozens of awards, including Social Science Achievement Awards and Teaching Achievement Awards.

The School's journalism and communication discipline is a key discipline under construction in Jiangxi Province. The first-level doctoral program in Journalism and Communication was approved in 2018 and remains the only doctoral program in this discipline in Jiangxi Province with a postdoctoral research station. In terms of research, the School has developed distinctive strengths in areas such as Red Culture Communication, Film and Television Communication, Network and New Media, and International Communication. In recent years, the School has secured major bidding projects from the National Social Science Fund, key projects, specially commissioned projects from the Central Propaganda Department, Chinese Academic Translation Projects, and projects from the Ministry of Education's Philosophy and Social Sciences Research Program. It has won more than 10 first and second prizes in Jiangxi Provincial Social Science Outstanding Achievement Awards, published over 70 academic papers in high-level journals such as Journalism and Communication Research, Marxist Studies, and Qiushi, and produced more than 20 research reports that received affirmative批示 from provincial leaders and achieved practical outcomes, effectively aligning with the economic and social development strategies of both the nation and Jiangxi Province.

The School currently serves as the chair unit of the Party Newspaper and Periodical Professional Committee of the Chinese Association for the History of Journalism and Communication, a vice-chair unit of both the Chinese Communication Society and the Global Corporate Communication Society, a vice-chair unit of the National Red Culture Communication and Marxist Journalism Education Alliance, and the chair unit of the Local Universities Marxist Journalism Education Alliance. It also serves as the lead unit for the Jiangxi Provincial University Journalism and Communication Discipline Alliance and the Jiangxi Provincial University Journalism and Communication Majors Teaching Guidance Committee. The School hosts four provincial-level think tanks and key philosophy and social science research bases: the Jiangxi Media Integration Development Research Center, the Public Opinion Monitoring and Governance Research Center, the Central Soviet Area Red Culture Communication Research Center, and the Jiangxi University International Communication Research Center. These platforms have produced a series of distinctive landmark achievements and formed multiple characteristic research directions and advantageous research areas.

The School places strong emphasis on talent cultivation, promoting the comprehensive development of students in moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and labor education, with notable achievements in fostering virtue and cultivating talent. Our students have repeatedly won gold, silver, and bronze awards in prestigious professional competitions, including the "Taofen New Seedling Award"—the highest award for journalism students in national university competitions—as well as in national journalism student paper selections, the National College New Media Creative Competition, the China College Students Advertising Art Competition, and the International "Internet+" College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. Graduates of the School are employed across all provinces and cities nationwide, with a significant number working in renowned media organizations such as Xinhua News Agency, People's Daily, China Central Radio and Television, as well as various large-scale cultural communication enterprises and advertising agencies. Mu Qing, former President of Xinhua News Agency, once remarked on our School's educational outcomes: "Most of your students have become key personnel at Xinhua News Agency. This is an important base for journalism talent cultivation in China." People's Daily also sent a special letter to the Party Committee of Nanchang University, highly commending the political quality and professional skills of our students.
